Chunkurchak Gorge

Chunkurchak Gorge, the highest mountain gorge near Bishkek, is a beloved retreat for both locals and visitors. Spanning almost 30 kilometers, it sits at an impressive altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level. The name “Chunkurchak” translates to “depression” in Kyrgyz, but there is nothing depressing about its stunning beauty.

Known as one of Kyrgyzstan’s most picturesque gorges, Chunkurchak offers a breathtaking blend of snow-capped peaks, lush alpine meadows, dense coniferous forests, and rich, reddish soil. As you approach the entrance to the gorge, the views of the Chui Valley unfold in all their glory, providing a panoramic experience that’s simply unforgettable.

For those seeking a refreshing escape, a visit to Pigeon Waterfall is a must. With a height of around 35 meters, the waterfall creates a mesmerizing scene as water cascades down, splashing onto the surrounding rocks.

Chunkurchak is a year-round destination. In winter, the gorge transforms into a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, with four ski resorts offering opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, and sledding. In summer, these resorts become koumiss (fermented mare’s milk) health retreats and peaceful holiday spots. The gorge’s dramatic cliffs also draw rock climbers and mountaineers, with some areas remaining snow-covered and icy even in winter. Every year, the gorge hosts dry-tooling competitions, where climbers use ice equipment to conquer the snowy heights.

Cyclists and Nordic walking fans are regular visitors to Chunkurchak as well, adding to the vibrant mix of activities.

Chunkurchak is also part of the National Bio Reserve, established to protect rare tulip species. One of the most notable is the royal tulip, which can grow up to 18 centimeters long. In the spring, the fields of Chunkurchak are transformed into a sea of red, as thousands of tulips bloom, including the famous Zinaida variety.

It’s recommended to explore Chunkurchak with a knowledgeable guide to fully appreciate its wonders.

The gorge is also home to the Supara Chunkurchak Ethno-Complex, where visitors can savor traditional Kyrgyz cuisine and stay in a yurt or hotel. Beyond Chunkurchak lies the Tatyr Gorge, and nearby, the Bir-Kulak Gorge, famous for its abundant raspberry bushes.

With its mix of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and cultural experiences, Chunkurchak Gorge is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the wonders of Kyrgyzstan.
