Semyonovka and Grigorevka Gorges

Grigorevka Gorge

Semyonovka and Grigorevka are among the most well-known and scenic gorges along the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul, nestled in the picturesque Kungey Ala-Too (Sunny Ala-Too) Mountains. Located just 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Cholpon-Ata on the route from Bishkek, these villages are surrounded by a network of trekking routes, some of which lead over the mountains into Kazakhstan, towards Almaty.

Semyonovka, named after the Russian explorer Pyotr Semyonov, serves as the gateway to stunning mountain landscapes. A paved road stretches 15 kilometers into the mountains, following the Chon Ak-Suu (Big White Water) River and passing the Kyrchyn tour base. The road eventually reaches a summer pasture, or jailoo, located 2,010 meters (6,595 feet) above sea level, where the Chon Ak-Suu converges with the Kichi Ak-Suu (Little White Water) River. This river flows from glaciers, winding 34 kilometers (21 miles) down to Lake Issyk-Kul, passing through three small lakes. Historically, this jailoo served as a gathering place for congresses of Kyrgyz elders.

From late June through September, a yurt village is set up in this area, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience of Kyrgyz nomadic life. Half of the yurts are available for guests, while the other half are occupied by local families who provide services, entertainment, and a taste of traditional life. Visitors can sleep in yurts on traditional felt blankets and enjoy a more rustic lifestyle, with traditional facilities such as outdoor toilets and simple washing arrangements. However, the authenticity of the experience—exploring Kyrgyz history, culture, crafts, cuisine, and traditional games—makes it truly unforgettable. Guests can also embark on treks on foot or horseback, venturing through the beautiful countryside to encounter half-wild yaks. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, there are craft demonstrations, traditional horse-riding displays, recitations of the “Epic of Manas,” concerts featuring Kyrgyz instruments, and kumis tastings, making for an all-encompassing cultural immersion.

The yurt village is ideal for a day trip from the shores of Issyk-Kul, or for a longer trekking adventure over several days. Semyonovka’s proximity to Bishkek also makes it a great option for a long weekend, or it can be seamlessly integrated into a broader tour of the region.

On the northeastern edge of the village, ancient graves dating back to the 5th to 3rd century BCE can be found, with more scattered further up the Ak-Suu River valley. Adding to the historical charm of the area is a dacha located near Semyonovka on the shores of Issyk-Kul. Built in the 1960s for a visit by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, the modest retreat was used only once. Though the dacha has since fallen into disrepair, there are plans to renovate and restore this relic of the Soviet era.
