Suusamyr Valley

Suusamyr valley

The Suusamyr Valley, located at an elevation of 2,200 meters above sea level, is a breathtaking intermountain depression nestled among towering peaks, some reaching up to 4,500 meters. This expansive green plain stretches 155 kilometers in length and, in places, spans up to 40 kilometers in width. Historically, it was a crucial waypoint on the Great Silk Road, situated 160 kilometers from Bishkek.

The valley is renowned for its rich biodiversity, with over 300 plant species, including several medicinal varieties, flourishing in its vast meadows. Although trees are scarce, the valley’s flora includes species listed in the Red Book. The elusive snow leopard, also a Red Book resident, roams these lands. Two mountain rivers, the Suusamyr and Western Karakol, along with a refreshing mountain spring, traverse the valley.

During the summer months, from May to July, Suusamyr transforms into a lush, green sea, attracting shepherds who set up their traditional yurts to graze their cattle. The pastures of Suusamyr, known as Zhailoo, are among the best in Kyrgyzstan. Here, visitors can sample the region’s famed koumiss (fermented mare’s milk) and ayran, along with local mountain honey. The shepherds are renowned for producing some of the finest koumiss, a staple of Kyrgyz hospitality.

The valley also boasts health resorts and holiday homes, popular among both Kyrgyzstani and CIS visitors. In winter, Suusamyr is a snowy wonderland, home to the renowned «Too-Ashuu» ski complex, which attracts snowboarders and skiers. The valley’s open fields provide a safe haven for paragliders, while climbers also find it an appealing destination.

Suusamyr’s historical allure is highlighted by unique stone sculptures and burial mounds dating back to the 6th century BCE, with later examples from the 5th century CE. Nearby, the village of Suusamyr offers a glimpse into Kyrgyz life, with opportunities to stay overnight and experience local culture.

The village of Kozhomkul, close to the valley, features the mazar (grave-mausoleum) of the legendary hero Kozhomkul, whose handprints are preserved on the walls. A local museum provides insights into the valley’s rich history.

Be aware that temperatures can be cool even in summer, so it is advisable to bring warm clothing when visiting this remarkable region.
