Itinerary

Day 1Samarkand – Penjikent

Begin your adventure with a morning transfer from your hotel in Samarkand to the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan border at Jartepa, which is about an hour away (50 km). Upon clearing customs and passport control, meet your local guide and driver on the Tajik side. Start your journey by heading to Penjikent, making a brief stop at the ancient settlement of Sarazm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival in Penjikent, explore this city’s historical significance. Visit the Rudaki Museum, honoring the famous Persian poet, Abu Abdallah Rudaki, who was born here. Next, discover the ruins of old Penjikent, an ancient Sogdian town founded in the 5th century. The city was abandoned in the 8th century following the Arab conquest, but the remnants of homes, citadels, and Zoroastrian fire temples are still visible today. After the tour, enjoy your evening and stay overnight at a hotel in Penjikent.

Day 2Penjikent – Seven Lakes – Penjikent

On the second day, prepare for a scenic drive (80 km) into the Fann Mountains to visit the renowned Seven Lakes, also known as Haf Kul. Each lake, surrounded by mountain peaks, boasts distinct hues and tranquil surroundings. The lakes, Mijgon, Soya, Hushyor, Nofin, Khurdak, Marguzor, and Hazorchashma, range from 2139 to 2400 meters above sea level, offering spectacular views. Enjoy a peaceful picnic at the final lake, Hazorchashma, surrounded by breathtaking nature. After a day of exploring the lakes, return to Penjikent for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3Penjikent – Istaravshan – Khujand

After breakfast, leave Penjikent and embark on a scenic drive to Khujand, passing through the historic city of Istaravshan (260 km, 5-6 hours). Istaravshan, an ancient city believed to have been founded by King Cyrus, is rich in history and culture. Visit the bustling local bazaar, followed by a tour of the Hazrat Shah architectural complex. This site includes the Hazrat Shah Mausoleum, which holds the grave of Kusam ibn Abbas’s brother, along with the Khudayar Valami Mausoleum and the 19th-century Namazgah Mosque. Explore Mug Teppe, an ancient fortress that offers a glimpse into the city’s storied past. Continue to Khujand, where you will check in to your hotel for the night.
Duration of sightseeing: 4-5 hours

Day 4:Khujand – Oybek Border Point – Tashkent

On your final day, enjoy a morning tour of Khujand, one of the oldest cities in Central Asia and a key hub along the Silk Road. Visit the Museum of Archaeology and Fortification to delve deeper into the city’s rich past. Next, visit the Shaikh Muslihiddin Mosque and the Payshanba Bazaar, the largest market in Tajikistan, where you can experience the vibrant local culture. Your tour also includes a stop at the Arbob Palace, a grand building named after S. Urunhodlaev, built in the 20th century, and the Kayrakkum Hydro Power Station, also known as the “Tajik Sea,” symbolizing the people’s friendship. After your city tour, transfer to the Oybek border point (70 km, 1 hour). Upon crossing back into Uzbekistan, meet your driver for the transfer to Tashkent (100 km, 1 hour 30 minutes), where your memorable journey concludes.

The trip was well-organized, starting with an easy border crossing and a fascinating exploration of Penjikent’s ruins and the Rudaki Museum. The Seven Lakes were a standout, each lake offering a unique and picturesque view. Istaravshan’s ancient sites, including the Hazrat Shah complex, were incredibly enriching.
