Nestled in the Fann Mountains of western Tajikistan, near the town of Penjikent, lies one of the region’s most breathtaking natural wonders—the Seven Lakes, also known as the Marguzor Lakes. Each of these lakes has its unique name, starting with the lowest and first on the path, Nezhigon, followed by Soya, Gushor, Nofin, Khurdak, the largest—Marguzor, and finally, Hazorchashma.

The journey to these lakes is best started from Samarkand, the closest major city to the Fann Mountains. The drive from Samarkand to Penjikent takes about an hour and a half, covering a distance of 66 kilometers. From Penjikent, after crossing the border, you head directly towards the Marguzor Lakes.

According to an old legend, the lakes owe their existence to the tears of seven sisters. The story goes that a long time ago, an old man lost his way in the valley, and his seven daughters set out to find him. Despite their desperate calls, the man was never found. The sisters sat on a narrow path, weeping for their lost father. Their tears filled the valley, creating the seven lakes where the sisters tragically drowned. The first and most beautiful of these sisters was named Mijgon, which is also the name of the first lake in the valley, situated at an altitude of 1,640 meters.

The Seven Lakes are situated along the Shing River Gorge. The lowest lake, Nezhigon, is found at 1,640 meters above sea level, while the final lake, Hazorchashma, sits at 2,400 meters. The total elevation gain between the lakes is 760 meters, and the distance between the farthest lakes is more than 14 kilometers. A dirt road runs through all seven lakes, but the steep switchbacks can be challenging to navigate.

Except for the last one, Hazorchashma, all the lakes are of the barrier type, formed by landslides that blocked the narrow gorge, creating this stunning series of connected water bodies. Each lake has its own character and beauty, making the journey through them an unforgettable experience.
