Zmeinoye Lake (Zamin Mulla)

Zmeinoye Lake (Zamin Mulla)

Unlike Iskanderkul, which is fed by glacial rivers giving it a striking turquoise hue, Snake Lake is remarkably clear. Its pristine waters are maintained by underground springs and the proximity of Iskanderkul, from which water filters through a natural barrier. The only significant influx of water into Snake Lake occurs during the spring thaw when snowmelt contributes to its levels.

This clarity of water in Snake Lake supports a thriving fish population, contrasting with Iskanderkul, where the high levels of mineral impurities from the surrounding mountains render it unsuitable for fish. Despite the overall harmlessness of these impurities to humans, they affect the lake’s aquatic life adversely.

From an observation point, you can easily distinguish Iskanderkul’s turquoise expanse, while the black triangular shape in the upper right corner is Snake Lake. Interestingly, Snake Lake has a local caretaker who breeds fish there, available for sale and even for dining right on-site. This makes it a unique spot not only for its natural beauty but also for its local culinary offerings.
