Itinerary

Day 1Tbilisi – Jvari Monastery – Ananuri Complex – Kazbegi – Gergeti Trinity Church

Your adventure begins at 09:00, when your local guide meets you in the lobby of your Tbilisi hotel. The day starts with a scenic drive toward the ancient Jvari Monastery, a striking example of early medieval Georgian architecture. Perched on a hilltop, this UNESCO-listed site offers breathtaking views where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers meet, making it a perfect introduction to the country’s spiritual and natural beauty.

From Jvari, the journey continues to the Ananuri architectural complex, once the seat of the powerful Aragvi dukes. Set along the banks of the turquoise Jinvali Reservoir, the complex features well-preserved 16th–17th century towers, defensive walls, and churches, all backed by the dramatic Caucasus scenery.

You’ll then ascend further along the historic Georgian Military Highway, passing scenic highlands and remote hamlets. At 2,394 meters above sea level, you’ll cross the highest point of the highway before arriving in the picturesque town of Kazbegi (also known as Stepantsminda), nestled at the base of the majestic Mount Kazbek, which rises to 5,054 meters and is the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus range.

In the afternoon, embark on a moderate hike (approx. 6 km round trip, 2–3 hours) to the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church. Standing proudly on a hilltop at 2,170 meters, this 14th-century church offers one of the most postcard-perfect views in Georgia, especially when framed against Mount Kazbek in the background. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, a 4WD vehicle can be arranged to reach the church at an additional cost of $30 USD. Return to Kazbegi for an overnight stay at a local hotel.
Tour duration: 9–10 hours
Driving distance: approx. 160 km

Day 2Kazbegi – Truso Valley Hike – Return to Tbilisi

After breakfast in your Kazbegi hotel, prepare for a day immersed in one of Georgia’s most tranquil and remote mountain valleys. You’ll switch to an AWD vehicle to access the starting point of the Truso Valley hike. Depart from Kvemo Okrokana village and set out on a journey through vast alpine meadows, mineral springs, ancient watchtowers, and colorful travertine formations.

The full hike to the ruins of the Zakagori Fortress and back typically takes around 6–8 hours, covering vast stretches of unspoiled wilderness and abandoned villages that hint at centuries of history. If you prefer a shorter walk, your driver can take you deeper into the valley—close to the travertines—shortening the hike to approximately 4 hours while still offering an enriching experience.

After returning to the village, reunite with your original driver and transfer back to Tbilisi. Your adventure concludes in the evening, with memories of dramatic landscapes and cultural encounters that capture the heart of Northern Georgia.
