Route in brief:

Tashkent – Khiva – Tashkent

Embark on a captivating two-day journey from Tashkent to Khiva, where the mystique of a bygone era awaits. This ancient city, over 2,500 years old, stands as a testament to its storied past as a pivotal Silk Road hub, nestled near the Khorezm Oasis. Today, Khiva’s charm is preserved in its labyrinthine streets and ornate tilework, making it a living museum of history and culture.

On Day 1, your adventure begins with a morning flight from Tashkent to Urgench. From there, a short transfer takes you to the heart of Khiva. Once settled, you’ll embark on a guided tour of Ichan-Kala, the city’s well-preserved citadel and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through its historic streets and marvel at the architectural splendor of Alauddinkhan Mausoleum, the 18th-century Mukhammad Aminkhan Madrasah, and the Ak-Maszhid mosque. Don’t miss the exquisite Pakhlavan Makhmud Mausoleum and the towering Minaret of Islam-Khoja. As the day unfolds, explore the serene Juma Mosque, the regal Tash-Khovli Palace, and the scholarly Allakulikhan Madrasah. Your evening is free to soak in the ambiance of this enchanting city before you retire for the night at your hotel.

Day 2 takes you beyond Khiva’s city limits into the rugged Kyzylkum Desert. Here, you’ll explore the ancient ruins of Khorezm, starting with Kyzyl-Kala and Toprak-Kala—remarkable relics from the Kushan-Afraid period. Toprak-Kala, known as Khorezm’s “museum of fine arts,” offers a rare glimpse into ancient architectural genius, while Kyzyl-Kala’s defensive structures hint at its historical role. Your exploration continues with a visit to Ayaz-Kala, a formidable fortress from the 2nd century AD, which served as a stronghold for the Kushan Empire. After an enriching day, you’ll return to Urgench for your evening flight back to Tashkent, concluding your unforgettable tour.

Itinerary

Day 1Tashkent – Urgench – Khiva

Your journey begins with a morning transfer from your Tashkent hotel to the domestic airport for a flight to Urgench. After arriving in Urgench, you’ll be driven the 30 km distance to Khiva, a scenic journey of about 35 minutes. Once in Khiva, check into your hotel and get ready for an exciting day of exploration.

The first stop on your itinerary is a guided tour of Ichan-Kala, the historic core of Khiva and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ichan-Kala is an exceptional example of medieval urban design, featuring narrow streets and remarkable architecture. During the tour, you’ll encounter the Alauddinkhan Mausoleum, known for its intricate design and classic Islamic architecture. Visit the Mukhammad Aminkhan Madrasah, an 18th-century religious school renowned for its stunning tile work and impressive facade. The tour continues at the Ak-Maszhid Mosque, a serene place of worship with historical significance, and the Madrasah of Khoja Berdibiy, an educational institution with a rich past.

The Shirgazikhan Complex offers historical and architectural interest, while the Pakhlavan Makhmud Mausoleum provides insight into local religious and cultural practices. Don’t miss the Minaret of Islam-Khoja, which offers panoramic views of the city, and the Juma Mosque, an 18th-century mosque famous for its wooden columns and tranquil atmosphere. Explore the Tash-Khovli Palace, an opulent residence with elaborate design, and the Allakulikhan Madrasah, a key educational and architectural landmark.

After a day filled with history and culture, you will have some free time in the evening to unwind and explore Khiva at your leisure. Overnight accommodation will be at a local hotel.

Day 2Khiva – Kyzylkum Desert – Urgench – Tashkent

The second day begins with a 9:00 AM pickup from your Khiva hotel by your guide and driver. You will then travel to the Kyzylkum Desert, covering a distance of 150 km, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Here, you will explore the archaeological treasures of Ancient Khorezm.

Your first stop will be Kyzyl-Kala, an ancient site from the Kushan-Afraid period known for its distinctive architecture. Next, you will visit Toprak-Kala, an ancient settlement that served as the capital of Khorezm in the 3rd century AD. Often referred to as the “museum of fine arts” of Ancient Khorezm, Toprak-Kala is celebrated for its well-preserved architecture and historical significance. There is a local legend about a subterranean passage connecting Toprak-Kala to Kyzyl-Kala, suggesting that Kyzyl-Kala may have served a defensive purpose.

The journey continues to Ayaz-Kala, a grand fortress dating back to the 2nd century AD, during the peak of the Kushan Empire. This impressive structure was a strategic military complex rather than a city or settlement, showcasing the architectural ingenuity and defensive strategies of its era.

In the late afternoon, you’ll return to Urgench for your flight back to Tashkent. Upon arrival in Tashkent, you will be transferred to your hotel or private residence, marking the conclusion of your enriching two-day tour of Khiva.
