Itinerary

Day 1Journey from Tbilisi to Kazbegi via Jvari and Ananuri

Your adventure begins at 09:00 when you meet your guide at your hotel lobby in Tbilisi. From there, you’ll set out on a scenic drive to the first destination of the day – Jvari Monastery. Perched high on a hill, this early medieval architectural marvel offers panoramic views over the dramatic confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. The church itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Georgia’s most significant religious landmarks and a testament to early Christian architecture in the Caucasus.

Next, continue your drive to the remarkable Ananuri architectural complex, which once served as the seat of the Aragvi Dukes. Nestled along the shores of the turquoise Jinvali Reservoir, the complex includes defensive towers, churches, and residential buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. The tranquil setting and well-preserved stonework provide a fascinating glimpse into feudal Georgian history.

Following the Ananuri visit, your journey ascends along the famous Georgian Military Highway, passing through dramatic mountain landscapes and crossing the highest point of the road at 2,394 meters above sea level. This stretch offers captivating views of alpine terrain and winding river valleys.

In the afternoon, arrive in Stepantsminda (commonly known as Kazbegi), a picturesque mountain town nestled at the base of the majestic Mount Kazbek (also known as Mkinvari), which towers at 5,054 meters and is the seventh highest peak in the Caucasus. From the town, embark on a scenic hike (approx. 6 km, 2–3 hours) to the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church. Situated at 2,170 meters, this solitary church set against the backdrop of snow-dusted peaks is one of the most photographed spots in Georgia. For those who prefer a more comfortable option, a 4WD vehicle can be arranged for an additional $30 USD.

After the hike, return to Kazbegi for an overnight stay at a local hotel, surrounded by the serenity of the Greater Caucasus.

Tour duration: 9–10 hours
Driving distance: ~160 km
Hiking distance: ~6 km / 2–3 hours

Day 2From Kazbegi to Gveleti Waterfalls, Juta, and Return to Tbilisi

After a refreshing night in the mountains, enjoy breakfast and check out from your hotel. Meet your guide once again and head towards the Gveleti Waterfalls, hidden gems located in a nearby gorge. A light walk along scenic forest trails leads you to two cascading waterfalls – the Small Gveleti (770 meters / 30-minute walk) and the Big Gveleti (940 meters / 35-minute walk). Both offer peaceful nature settings perfect for photography and short, invigorating hikes.

Continue the journey through the picturesque Sno Valley, framed by steep cliffs and vibrant green pastures, toward the remote village of Juta, located at an elevation of 2,150 meters. The narrow mountain road gradually reveals stunning alpine views and a traditional village known for its unspoiled beauty and tranquil atmosphere.

In Juta, begin an uphill hike through flower-filled meadows and rugged highlands. The trail (approximately 6–7 km round trip, 3–4 hours) climbs up to around 2,570 meters, where dramatic panoramas of surrounding peaks and valleys await. This hike is a highlight for photography lovers and those who want to connect with pristine Georgian nature.

After enjoying the breathtaking landscapes and fresh mountain air, descend back to the village and begin the return drive to Tbilisi. Arrive in the evening and drop off at your hotel, marking the end of your unforgettable 2-day North Georgia mountain adventure.
