Ala-Kol, also known as Ala-Köl or Ala-Kul, is an alpine glacial lake located in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul region, widely regarded as the jewel of the Terskey-Ala-Too mountain range. Nestled between the Altyn-Arashan and Karakol gorges, the lake is framed by snow-capped mountains that define the southern side of the Issyk-Kul basin. This ridge is the second largest center of glaciation in the Tian Shan Mountains.
The name Ala-Kol translates from Kyrgyz as «motley lake,» reflecting the lake’s remarkable ability to change colors depending on the weather. On clear, sunny days, its waters shimmer turquoise, while overcast skies turn the lake a more subdued gray. Throughout the year, and even within a single day, the water can shift hues, displaying shades of pink-gold, dark blue, purple, and yellow.
Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 3,532 meters above sea level, Ala-Kol stretches 2.3 kilometers in length and 700 meters in width. Although the lake’s full depth remains unexplored, experts estimate it exceeds 70 meters. The pristine, crystal-clear waters of Ala-Kol are fed by melting glaciers, but due to its high altitude, the lake remains frozen from late autumn until May. Even in summer, the water is icy cold, yet many adventurous visitors can’t resist a refreshing dip after trekking in the heat.
Ala-Kol is a highlight for those hiking between Altyn-Arashan and Jeti-Oguz Gorge. Reaching the lake requires navigating rocky paths and rugged terrain, with the trek spanning about 30 kilometers. The journey offers stunning views of forests and mountains, often compared to the landscapes of New Zealand.
Alternatively, visitors can access the lake via a popular circular route. This 8-kilometer trail from the Karakol Gorge is one of Kyrgyzstan’s most frequented mountain treks. While it’s possible to get closer to Ala-Kol by vehicle, the rough terrain demands an experienced off-road driver. For a more immersive experience, part of the journey can also be made on horseback.
It’s strongly recommended to visit Ala-Kol with a knowledgeable guide, as the mountain paths can be disorienting despite the stone markers left by previous travelers. Going without guidance poses significant risks, but for those who seek adventure and the beauty of untouched nature, Ala-Kol offers a rewarding experience like no other.
