Lake Kara-Tokoy, nestled in the northeast of the Chatkal Ridge in Kyrgyzstan’s Jalal-Abad region, is a serene mountain lake formed by an earthquake in the late 19th or early 20th century. The name «Kara-Tokoy» translates from Kyrgyz as «black forest,» an apt description for the surrounding landscape of coniferous trees and towering Tien Shan firs, whose tops can even be seen peeking out from beneath the lake’s waters.
Set within the picturesque Kara-Tokoy Valley, this area comes to life in the summer, with lush meadows and scenic vistas that feel straight out of a movie. The landscape is dominated by dense coniferous forests and abundant plant life, making it a haven for nature lovers.
Lake Kara-Tokoy sits at an altitude that varies depending on the source, with estimates ranging from 2,876 to 2,918 meters above sea level. Nearby, the Kara-Tokoy Glacier, stretching 1.9 kilometers in length and covering an area of 1.2 square kilometers, rises at altitudes between 3,370 and 3,820 meters.
The lake itself is a striking deep blue, visible from afar and inviting visitors to its chilly waters, even in the height of summer. Despite its cold temperature, swimming in the lake is a must for those who venture here.
Kara-Tokoy Lake lies close to the renowned Sary-Chelek Nature Reserve, a UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve spanning nearly 24,000 square kilometers. This protected area is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, from animals to bird species, adding to the lake’s natural appeal.
Access to Kara-Tokoy requires a scenic journey through the Chatkal Valley and over the Kara-Buura Pass, a route known for its breathtaking views. Tourists frequently stop to capture photos at the pass, though it should be noted that the drive can be challenging for standard vehicles.
In recent years, Lake Kara-Tokoy has become increasingly popular, attracting both local residents and international tourists, drawn by its stunning beauty and untouched natural surroundings.
