Kulun Lake

Kulun Lake, the largest mountain lake in Kyrgyzstan’s Osh region, sits at an impressive altitude of 2,856 meters within the Kulun State Reserve. Formed by an earthquake, the lake stretches 4.6 kilometers in length and 0.7 kilometers in width, covering an area of 3.25 square kilometers. Its depths reach up to 91 meters, making it a stunning natural wonder amid the alpine landscape.

Surrounded by alpine meadows, subalpine woodlands, and towering juniper-conifer forests, Kulun offers breathtaking mountain views from every shore. These mesmerizing vistas attract both tourists and locals alike, eager to experience the tranquil beauty of the region.

The Kulun Nature Reserve, established in 2004, aims to protect the diverse flora and fauna of the area. Poaching, once a threat to wildlife, is now strictly prohibited, and entry to the reserve requires a special permit. Spanning two sections—»Kulunata» with 18,500 hectares and «Tonzoo» with 6,000 hectares—the reserve is home to over 100 species of animals and birds, as well as more than 800 plant species. The primary goal of the reserve’s staff is to safeguard and preserve the rare species that inhabit this unique ecosystem.

In addition to Kulun Lake, the reserve also features Ortokol Lake, part of a rare mountain-lake system that includes Kulun, Maly Kulun, and Ortokol. The scenic beauty and ecological significance of these lakes make them a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

Just a short distance from Kulun Lake lies the sacred Kulun-Ata spring, steeped in legend. According to local lore, those seeking to have children should visit the spring alone and barefoot for a chance to fulfill their wishes. The story goes that a man once prayed at this site, and after falling asleep, he dreamed of a white horse emerging from the spring, giving birth to a mystical foal. The spring was named Kulun-Ata, meaning «foal father,» in honor of this event.

Nearby, an ancient mausoleum serves as the resting place for Kyrgyz heroes, or batyrs, who died defending their homeland. This sacred ground, with its rich history and natural beauty, continues to inspire reverence among visitors.
