Lake Kara-Suu, nestled at an altitude of 2,022 meters, lies at the intersection of the Talas, Naryn, and Jalal-Abad regions of Kyrgyzstan. It is set in a gorge framed by the Taktalyk and Ken-Kel (Kenkol) spurs, a natural beauty formed as a result of seismic activity. Despite its name, which translates to «black water» in Kyrgyz, the lake’s waters are a striking sky-blue, creating a mesmerizing contrast with the surrounding landscape.
Kara-Suu spans approximately 16 square kilometers, with its deepest point reaching 90 meters. The lake is fed by the Shibe River, while the 85-kilometer-long Kara-Suu River flows out, eventually joining the Naryn River. Even during the summer, the lake’s waters remain refreshingly cool.
Access to the southern shore is relatively easy, offering stunning vistas, though the northern side, adorned with jagged boulders, presents a more rugged beauty. Adventurers and climbers often favor this northern side for its picturesque views, including a breathtaking panorama of Alampasa Peak.
The surroundings of Kara-Suu are lush with diverse flora. Towering Tien Shan spruces share the landscape with mountain ash, birch, barberry, honeysuckle, and wild fruit trees. Rosehip bushes also flourish here. In the lake itself, fish species such as marinka and peled are cultivated, although fishing is strictly prohibited, regardless of the fish’s size or weight.
During the warmer months, the southern shore comes alive with local shepherds setting up yurts and grazing their livestock. It’s a scene that captures the timeless pastoral traditions of the region.
Just a short distance away from Kara-Suu, at an altitude of 2,303 meters, lies another natural gem—Lake Kapka-Tash. Translating to «stone gate» in Kyrgyz, this lake was also formed by an earthquake and shares the area’s rugged, untamed charm.
Visitors should be aware that the journey to Kara-Suu is not for the faint-hearted, as there are no paved roads, and the nearest settlement is 50 kilometers away, making this an adventure for those seeking true wilderness.
