Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Yerevan – City Exploration

Upon your arrival at Zvartnots International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your hotel in the heart of Yerevan. After check-in (available from noon), take some time to settle in and refresh. In the afternoon, your journey begins with a guided exploration of Yerevan — one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, founded in 782 BC. Often dubbed the “Pink City” due to the rose-colored tuff stone used in many of its buildings, Yerevan combines rich history with bold Soviet architecture and modern charm.

Begin your tour at Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex, which offers a moving tribute to the victims of the 1915 tragedy. Then, head to Cascade Complex, a monumental staircase offering both architectural splendor and panoramic views of Mount Ararat and the city skyline. Continue the walk through the beating heart of Yerevan: past the Opera House, elegant Northern Avenue, Republic Square, and historic Abovyan Street. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at a traditional Armenian restaurant, where you’ll be introduced to the flavors of the national cuisine. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 2Garni – Symphony of Stones – Geghard – Etchmiadzin – Return to Yerevan

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive eastward from Yerevan. Your first stop is the Temple of Garni, a stunning 1st-century Hellenistic pagan temple dedicated to the sun god Mihr. Remarkably, this is the only pagan temple that survived Armenia’s 4th-century conversion to Christianity, standing as a unique relic of pre-Christian Armenia.

Descend into the Garni Gorge to marvel at the Symphony of Stones, a fascinating natural rock formation resembling a giant organ — created by ancient volcanic activity and admired for its unique beauty. Next, visit the breathtaking Geghard Monastery, partially carved into the adjacent cliffs. Dating back to the 4th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site holds profound spiritual and historical significance.

Continue west to Etchmiadzin Cathedral, considered by many scholars to be the oldest Christian cathedral in the world. It is the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the official residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Conclude the day with a return to Yerevan. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3:Khor Virap – Areni – Noravank – Karahunj – Goris

Today’s route will take you south toward the Ararat Plain. Begin with a visit to Khor Virap Monastery, located near the Turkish border. This ancient site is revered for its association with Gregory the Illuminator, who was imprisoned here for 14 years before converting the Armenian King to Christianity — thus leading to Armenia becoming the first Christian nation in 301 AD. The views of Mount Ararat, just across the border, are spectacular on clear days.

Next, drive through the scenic Vayots Dzor region to the Areni Cave Complex, where archaeologists unearthed the world’s oldest known leather shoe, dating back over 5,500 years. A stop at Hin Areni Winery offers a chance to taste local wines made from indigenous grape varieties.

Your journey continues to Noravank Monastery, nestled dramatically within red limestone cliffs. This 13th-century monastic complex is famous for its vertical church and detailed carvings. On the way to Goris, make a stop at Karahunj (Carahunge), Armenia’s version of Stonehenge. Believed to be an ancient astronomical observatory, it features more than 200 stone monoliths with circular perforations. Arrive in Goris in the evening and check in for an overnight stay.

Day 4:Tatev – Khndzoresk Cave Village – Jermuk Spa Town

After breakfast, prepare for a memorable ascent to Tatev Monastery via the Wings of Tatev cable car — the longest reversible aerial tramway in the world, spanning 5.7 km above the Vorotan Gorge. The 9th-century Tatev Monastery once served as a cultural, religious, and educational center and sits majestically on a rocky plateau, offering breathtaking vistas.

Next, explore Old Khndzoresk, an ancient cave village that once housed thousands of people in dwellings carved directly into cliffs. Wander through its narrow passages and cross the famous swinging footbridge for panoramic views. The site reflects how communities once ingeniously adapted to Armenia’s rugged terrain.

Drive northward to Jermuk, a mountain resort town renowned for its thermal springs, mineral waters, and beautiful canyon setting. Enjoy a peaceful evening amid clean air and scenic views. Overnight at a spa hotel in Jermuk.

Day 5:Jermuk – Selim Pass – Noratus Cemetery – Lake Sevan – Dilijan

Start your day with a journey along the historic Selim Pass, one of the most picturesque mountain passes in Armenia at 2,410 meters above sea level. Here, you’ll stop at the Orbelian’s Caravanserai, a 14th-century stone inn that provided shelter for Silk Road travelers and merchants navigating these highlands.

Next, descend toward Noratus Cemetery, home to the largest collection of khachkars (intricately carved Armenian cross-stones) in the world. Each khachkar tells its own story, showcasing the mastery of medieval Armenian stone carving. Recognized by UNESCO, this site is a profound reflection of spiritual and cultural identity.

Continue on to the serene shores of Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes on Earth. Visit the Sevanavank Monastery, dramatically perched on a rocky peninsula, offering sweeping views of the glittering lake and surrounding mountains. End your day in the green town of Dilijan, often called “Armenia’s Switzerland.” Overnight in Dilijan.

Day 6:Dilijan – Haghpat – Sanahin – Gyumri

After a hearty breakfast in Dilijan, travel into the Lori region to discover two of Armenia’s most treasured medieval landmarks, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Your first visit is to the Haghpat Monastery, built between the 10th and 13th centuries and designed to harmonize with the surrounding landscape. It served as a major center of learning and manuscript production. Then proceed to Sanahin Monastery, another gem of Armenian ecclesiastical architecture, known for its school of calligraphy and scientific thought. Both complexes are nestled in the forested highlands above the Debed River Gorge, with stunning scenery all around.

Afterward, drive west to Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city and a cultural hub known for its artistic heritage and humor. Check in and explore its charming 19th-century streets, featuring black tuff buildings and Russian Imperial-style architecture. Overnight in Gyumri.

Day 7:Gyumri – Amberd Fortress – Oshakan – Return to Yerevan

Begin your morning with a short walk in Gyumri’s historic center to admire its unique urban design and architecture. Then set out for Amberd Fortress, a 7th-century stronghold located high on the slopes of Mount Aragats at an elevation of 2,300 meters. The name “Amberd” translates as “Fortress in the Clouds,” and true to its name, it offers a dramatic and panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The fortress complex includes a church, bathhouse, and defensive walls, all in a remarkably well-preserved state.

Next, visit Oshakan, a village of immense cultural significance. Here lies the burial site of Saint Mesrop Mashtots, the inventor of the Armenian alphabet. The cathedral built over his tomb is a pilgrimage site and an enduring symbol of Armenian identity and literacy.

Return to Yerevan for your final evening in the capital. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 8:Departure from Yerevan

After breakfast and hotel check-out (by noon), you’ll be transferred to Zvartnots International Airport for your onward flight. Take with you unforgettable memories of majestic landscapes, ancient spiritual sites, and the deep soul of Armenia.
