Transfer to your hotel in the heart of Tbilisi for check-in around noon. After a brief rest, it’s time to dive into the vibrant atmosphere of Georgia’s charming capital.
Begin your exploration at the historic Metekhi Church, dramatically perched above the river, alongside the statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, Tbilisi’s legendary founder. Ascend by cable car to Narikala Fortress, an ancient sentinel offering panoramic vistas of the city’s eclectic skyline.
Descending through the atmospheric old streets, you’ll pass Tbilisi’s iconic Sulphur Baths, renowned for their therapeutic qualities. Nearby stands the city’s sole mosque, a symbol of Tbilisi’s diverse cultural tapestry. Wander into the delightful Sharden area, a maze of narrow alleyways dotted with cozy cafes, wine bars, and artisan boutiques, where the city’s past mingles with its bohemian present.
Next, visit the Sioni Cathedral, an architectural gem, and the Anchiskhati Basilica, Tbilisi’s oldest surviving church. Don’t miss the whimsical clock tower of Rezo Gabriadze Theatre, a beloved local landmark.
In the afternoon, venture to Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital and spiritual heart. Explore the majestic Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a revered pilgrimage site believed to enshrine Christ’s robe. This UNESCO World Heritage Site embodies centuries of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture.
Return to Tbilisi for a restful evening at the hotel.
After a hearty breakfast, depart Tbilisi towards Georgia’s central regions. Your first stop is the Jvari Monastery, a masterpiece of early medieval architecture poised atop a hill where the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers merge—a breathtaking view immortalized in poetry and legend.
Continue to Gori, the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Here, you’ll delve into Soviet history at the Stalin Museum, featuring over 60,000 artifacts, Stalin’s humble childhood home, and the formidable bulletproof train carriage he used during historic summits in Yalta and Potsdam.
Next, uncover the mysteries of Uplistsikhe, an extraordinary ancient cave city dating back to the Hellenistic period. Wander through rock-hewn halls, ancient temples, and pagan shrines, witnessing a seamless blend of pagan and Christian architecture carved directly into the sandstone cliffs.
The journey proceeds westward, traversing the Rikoti Pass, a natural divide between eastern and western Georgia, and through the country’s longest tunnel (1,722 m). By evening, arrive in Kutaisi, the cultural hub of western Georgia, once known as Aia in ancient Colchian mythology. Overnight at the hotel.
In the morning, set out towards Martvili Canyon, a hidden gem of natural beauty. As you drive through charming Megrelian villages with their picturesque courtyards and vine-laden arbors, you’ll sense the region’s rural authenticity.
Upon arrival, embark on a tranquil boat ride through the canyon, gliding beneath towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls, with sunlight dancing on the emerald waters. On foot, explore the walking trails and observation decks, perfect for capturing stunning photos.
In the afternoon, journey into the majestic Svaneti region, through the dramatic Inguri Gorge. Svaneti is home to the Svans, a proud and fiercely independent ethnic group whose unique traditions and distinct architecture have remained largely untouched for centuries. The region is often dubbed the “Land of a Thousand Towers”, thanks to its iconic medieval defensive structures.
Arrive in Mestia, the heart of Svaneti, where time seems to stand still. Visit an authentic Svan house (machubi) and its adjoining watchtower (koshki), gaining insight into the mountain people’s resilient way of life. Overnight in Mestia.
Fuel up with breakfast before setting out on an exhilarating 4×4 drive to Ushguli, Europe’s highest continuously inhabited settlement at 2,200 meters above sea level. The remote, UNESCO-listed Ushguli village is a living museum of Svan culture, with its ancient stone towers, cobblestone paths, and rustic charm.
Visit the Lamaria Church, an atmospheric 12th-century chapel adorned with striking frescoes. Local lore suggests it is the resting place of Queen Tamar, Georgia’s most beloved monarch. From Ushguli, savor awe-inspiring views of Mount Shkhara (5,201 m), the country’s highest peak.
Spend time wandering through the village, where every stone tells a story of resilience against time and nature. Return to Mestia for overnight stay.
Begin the day with a visit to the Mestia Ethnographic Museum, boasting a rich collection of ancient icons, manuscripts, and traditional Svan artifacts.
Around noon, depart for Kutaisi, retracing your route through Georgia’s lush lowlands. En route, you can choose between two immersive cultural experiences:
Ethno-Village “Sisatura” (optional, pre-booked): Stop in Chkhoria village near Zugdidi for a traditional lunch in a preserved Megrelian “Oda” house. This living museum showcases historical relics, vintage newspapers, and ancestral clothing. Savor authentic regional dishes like Gebzhalia, Ghomi, and Sulguni cheese in an intimate, heritage-rich setting.
Dadiani Palace Museum: Alternatively, explore the grand Dadiani Palace, a 17th-century residence of Megrelian nobility. The complex includes palatial buildings, a museum showcasing royal artifacts, and a serene botanical garden.
Arrive in Kutaisi for overnight stay.
After breakfast, delve into the subterranean marvels of the Prometheus Cave, an enchanting labyrinth of stalactites, stalagmites, underground rivers, and halls illuminated with mesmerizing lights.
Back in Kutaisi, visit the imposing Bagrati Cathedral (11th century), symbolizing Georgian unity and pride, majestically overlooking the city. Continue to the Gelati Monastery and Academy (12th century), founded by King David the Builder, one of Georgia’s greatest monarchs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once a beacon of scholarly and spiritual life during Georgia’s Golden Age.
In the afternoon, depart for Tbilisi (approx. 5-hour drive). Overnight in the capital.
After breakfast, embark on a journey to the fertile lands of Kakheti, Georgia’s premier wine-producing region. First, stop at the serene Bodbe Monastery, the revered burial site of St. Nino, who introduced Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century.
Next, visit Sighnaghi, affectionately known as the City of Love. Perched on a hilltop and encircled by defensive walls with 23 watchtowers, Sighnaghi offers splendid views over the Alazani Valley and the distant Caucasus mountains. Its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and charming squares evoke an old-world European ambiance.
In Kvareli, delve into Georgia’s rich viticulture heritage with a visit to the renowned Khareba Winery, located inside an impressive tunnel carved into the rock. Originally designed for military use, this labyrinth now provides the perfect environment for aging wines. Enjoy a guided tour and indulge in a wine tasting session, sampling some of Kakheti’s finest vintages.
