June 26: A Day of Military Pride

Armed Forces Day in Azerbaijan, celebrated on June 26, commemorates the historic establishment of the Azerbaijani National Army in 1918. This pivotal moment in the nation’s military history began when the Muslim Corps, a military unit formed in 1917 to safeguard Azerbaijanis against Russian aggression, was rebranded as the Detached Corps of Azerbaijan. This transformation marked the official inception of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, which would later be integrated into the Soviet military following the Red Army’s takeover of Azerbaijan in 1920.

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Azerbaijan took significant steps to re-establish its national army. Today, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces comprise various branches, including ground, air, and naval forces, as well as border patrol units, all committed to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and security. In 1998, under the leadership of President Heydar Aliyev, June 26 was designated as Armed Forces Day, transforming it into an annual public holiday celebrated with enthusiasm and pride.

On Armed Forces Day, the streets of Baku come alive as large crowds gather to witness a grand military parade, showcasing the might of the Azerbaijani military. Every unit participates in this impressive display, highlighting the capabilities and readiness of the armed forces.
