Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Ashgabat

Upon arrival at Ashgabat International Airport, you will be greeted by your tour guide and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, relax and unwind. Overnight in Ashgabat.

 

Day 2Ashgabat City Tour

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a city tour of Ashgabat, a vibrant, modern city recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for its extensive use of white marble. Highlights include:

  • Ertuğrul Gazi Mosque: A tribute to Ertuğrul, father of Osman I, founder of the Ottoman Empire.
  • Independence Park: Symbolizing the spirit of modern Turkmenistan.
  • Arch of Neutrality: Offering panoramic city views from its observation deck.
  • Nisa Historical Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site linked to the Parthian Empire.
  • Turkmenbashi Spiritual Mosque and Mausoleum in Kipchak: A significant religious and cultural site.

Conclude the day with dinner and a folk show performance. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 3Ashgabat – Kerki – Köýtendag

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Kerki. From Kerki, head to Köýtendag, a region famous for its “Dinosaur Plateau,” home to 438 fossilized dinosaur footprints dating back millions of years, as well as for its caves, considered the most beautiful and interesting caves in the former Soviet Union. Check in to a base lodge and enjoy the serene mountain surroundings. Overnight in Köýtendag.

Day 4:Discover Köýtendag

Spend the day exploring the wonders of Köýtendag. Key attractions include:

  • Ayry Baba Peak: The highest point in Turkmenistan (3,137 m).
  • Umbar Dere Gorge: Featuring a stunning 28-meter waterfall.
  • Gainar Baba Hot Spring: A hydrogen-sulfate-rich spring known for its therapeutic properties.
  • Kyrkgyz Canyon: A striking natural formation.
  • Karst Caves: Marvel at intricate cave systems unique to this region.

Wildlife enthusiasts may spot rare species such as spiral-horned goats and Buldiara rams. Overnight in Köýtendag.

Day 5:Köýtendag – Turkmenabat – Mary

After breakfast, depart for Turkmenabat. En route, visit the Astana Baba Mausoleum, a sacred 11th-12th century pilgrimage site, and the Alamberdar Mausoleum where thousands of sick people gather there annually to receive long-awaited healing. In Turkmenabat, at 19.29 board a train to Mary (arrival at 00:50) and transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Mary.

Day 6:Explore Mary and Ancient Merv

After breakfast, explore Ancient Merv, a former Silk Road hub and UNESCO World Heritage Site. One located at the former banks of the Murghab River, Merv was the most important Silk Road hub in the region, and particularly thriving as regional capital under Seljuk governor Sanjar. Merv is the collective name of five urban centers that existed under various different names in different periods from the VI c BC up to the XVIII c AD. The capital competed with the cities of the Islamic world such as Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus.

Later, enjoy a short walking tour of Mary’s central landmarks, including its mosque, theater, and Mollanepes Monument (the National Classic Poet who lived in Mary in XVIII-XIXcc). Board an overnight train to Ashgabat.

Day 7:Ashgabat – Darvaza Gas Crater

Upon arrival in Ashgabat, enjoy breakfast before visiting the Carpet Museum, home to a vast collection of Turkmen carpets. Continue to an Akhal-Teke horse stable to see the world-famous Turkmen horses. After lunch, journey to the Darvaza Gas Crater with visit of Erbent desert community on the way. Witness the spectacular views of the fiery crater at dusk before returning to Ashgabat after dark (slow driving). Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 8:Ashgabat – Turkmenbashy

After breakfast, take a morning flight 06:30/07:30 (flight time could be changed) to Turkmenbashy on the Caspian Sea. Spend a free day relaxing by the sea. Overnight in Turkmenbashy.

Day 9:Turkmenbashy – Yangykala Canyons – Ashgabat

Begin with an early drive to the Yangykala Canyons via Balkan Mountains, where vibrant white, green, and red limestone formations rise dramatically from the desert sands. These formations are remnants of the ancient Paratethys Sea. Explore the area by jeep and on foot, enjoying a picnic lunch amidst this surreal landscape. This surreal landscape is impressive at any time of day, but sunset and sunrise offer particularly spectacular views. Return to Turkmenbashy for an evening flight back to Ashgabat. Overnight in Ashgabat.

Day 10:Departure from Ashgabat

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your memorable journey.
