Day 2Discovering Tbilisi – Georgia's Historic Capital

After breakfast, embark on a comprehensive sightseeing tour of Tbilisi, a city whose rich history spans more than fifteen centuries. Built among hills and river valleys, the capital charms visitors with its colorful old neighborhoods, winding lanes, ornate balconies, and unique blend of architectural styles.

The tour begins at the historic Metekhi Church, one of the city’s most important landmarks. Perched on a rocky cliff overlooking the Mtkvari River, the church provides magnificent views across the old quarter and offers an excellent introduction to Tbilisi’s remarkable setting.

From here, stroll through the atmospheric streets of the Old Town, where centuries of history are reflected in every corner. Along the route, discover several of the city’s most important monuments, including Sioni Cathedral, the ancient Anchiskhati Basilica, traditional caravanserais that once welcomed merchants along trade routes, and the historic synagogue that reflects the city’s multicultural heritage.

A cable car ride takes you high above the city to the hilltop Narikala Fortress, whose origins date back to the early centuries of Tbilisi’s history. From the fortress walls, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the rooftops, churches, modern buildings, and surrounding hills before descending on foot through the historic district.

Continue to the famous sulfur bath quarter, where naturally heated thermal waters have attracted visitors for centuries. These distinctive bathhouses played a key role in the city’s development and remain one of Tbilisi’s most recognizable landmarks.

In the afternoon, explore Rustaveli Avenue, the elegant heart of modern Tbilisi. Lined with theaters, museums, galleries, cafés, and government buildings, this vibrant boulevard perfectly illustrates the city’s dynamic cultural life and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

In the evening, enjoy a traditional Georgian dinner featuring local specialties and regional flavors.

Day 3:Tbilisi – Bodbe – Sighnaghi – Kvareli – Nekresi – Telavi

Today’s journey leads eastward into Kakheti, Georgia’s renowned wine-producing region. Famous for its centuries-old winemaking traditions, fertile valleys, and warm hospitality, Kakheti offers some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Throughout the day, magnificent views of the snow-covered peaks of the Greater Caucasus accompany the journey.

The first stop is the Monastery of Bodbe, one of Georgia’s most important pilgrimage sites. Surrounded by peaceful gardens and overlooking the Alazani Valley, the monastery is closely associated with Saint Nino, the woman credited with bringing Christianity to Georgia during the fourth century. The tranquil atmosphere and stunning surroundings make this a memorable introduction to the region.

Continue to the picturesque town of Sighnaghi, often referred to as the “City of Love.” Encircled by impressive defensive walls, this beautifully restored hilltop settlement captivates visitors with its cobbled streets, colorful houses, wooden balconies, and charming architecture. Spectacular views stretch across the fertile Alazani Valley toward the distant Caucasus Mountains.

A special cultural highlight awaits at a local family home, where you will enjoy a traditional Georgian lunch. This authentic experience offers insight into everyday life in rural Georgia while introducing the country’s celebrated culinary traditions. Taste homemade dishes prepared according to family recipes, sample locally produced wine and traditional chacha, and observe the preparation of mtsvadi, Georgia’s beloved grilled meat skewers cooked over an open fire.

In the afternoon, travel to Nekresi Monastery, one of Kakheti’s oldest and most historically significant monastic complexes. Situated on a hillside above the valley, the site consists of several churches and religious buildings dating from different periods. The peaceful setting, ancient architecture, and sweeping views create an atmosphere of serenity and timeless beauty.

Before reaching Telavi, make a brief stop to admire the impressive Gremi Monastery Complex, once part of a thriving royal and commercial center that flourished during the sixteenth century.

Arrive in Telavi, the administrative and cultural center of Kakheti. Enjoy a walk through the old quarter, where historic buildings, traditional architecture, and relaxed local life provide an authentic glimpse into provincial Georgia.

Day 4:Telavi – Alaverdi – Ananuri – Gudauri

After breakfast, begin the day with a visit to Telavi’s lively local market. Known throughout Georgia for its abundance of fresh produce, aromatic spices, seasonal fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheeses, and traditional delicacies, the market provides an excellent opportunity to observe local life and discover the flavors of the region.

Leaving Telavi behind, travel to Alaverdi Cathedral, one of the most important religious monuments in eastern Georgia. Built during the eleventh century, this impressive cathedral dominates the surrounding landscape and remains a significant spiritual center for the region. Its elegant architecture and historical importance make it one of the highlights of Kakheti.

The route then turns northward toward the Greater Caucasus Mountains. As the scenery changes from vineyards and fertile plains to dramatic mountain valleys, the journey becomes increasingly spectacular. Travel along sections of Georgia’s legendary Military Highway, one of the country’s most scenic roads, which has connected Georgia with the northern Caucasus for centuries.

Along the way, visit the remarkable Ananuri Fortress Complex overlooking the turquoise waters of the Jinvali Reservoir. Dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the fortress once served as the residence of powerful local rulers. Surrounded by mountains and reflected in the reservoir below, Ananuri is considered one of Georgia’s most photogenic historical landmarks.

Continue higher into the mountains, passing magnificent panoramas of alpine valleys, rushing rivers, and snow-capped peaks. By evening, arrive in Gudauri, Georgia’s premier mountain resort situated at approximately 2,000 meters above sea level in the heart of the Greater Caucasus.

Day 5:Gudauri – Stepantsminda – Gergeti Trinity Church – Dariali Valley – Gudauri

After breakfast, continue your journey deeper into the spectacular Greater Caucasus Mountains. Today’s excursion showcases some of the most breathtaking alpine scenery in Georgia and offers an unforgettable encounter with one of the country’s most iconic landmarks.

Travel north along the Georgian Military Highway towards Stepantsminda, a picturesque mountain town nestled beneath the towering peaks of the Caucasus. Throughout the drive, enjoy magnificent views of dramatic valleys, rugged cliffs, mountain rivers, and distant snow-covered summits.

Upon arrival in Stepantsminda, begin a scenic hike to the famous Gergeti Trinity Church, one of Georgia’s most photographed and recognizable monuments. The trail gradually ascends through lush mountain meadows, forests, and open slopes, revealing increasingly impressive views of the surrounding landscape.

Perched at an altitude of 2,170 meters above sea level, Gergeti Trinity Church occupies a truly spectacular location against the backdrop of Mount Kazbek. Rising to 5,047 meters, this extinct stratovolcano is among the highest peaks in the Caucasus and has inspired countless legends throughout history. Weather permitting, visitors can admire the mountain’s glacier-covered summit towering above the church, creating one of the most dramatic panoramas in the region.

Take time to appreciate the peaceful atmosphere, photograph the magnificent scenery, and learn about the importance of this remote religious sanctuary, which has served as a place of worship and refuge for centuries.

After descending to Stepantsminda, continue towards the beautiful Dariali Valley, located near the border with Russia. This dramatic mountain gorge has historically served as one of the principal gateways through the Caucasus and has been celebrated by travelers, poets, and explorers for generations. Surrounded by steep cliffs and carved by the powerful Terek River, the valley offers a striking display of the region’s natural beauty.

In the afternoon, return through the mountain landscapes to Gudauri.

Dinner and overnight in Gudauri.

Day 6:Gudauri – Mtskheta – Uplistsikhe – Gori

Following breakfast, leave the high mountains behind and travel towards some of Georgia’s most important historical and cultural treasures.

The first destination is Mtskheta, the ancient capital of the Georgian Kingdom and one of the country’s most sacred religious centers. With a history spanning nearly three thousand years, Mtskheta played a pivotal role in the development of Georgian culture and Christianity.

Visit the magnificent Jvari Monastery, dramatically situated on a hilltop overlooking the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Built during the sixth century, this masterpiece of early Georgian architecture offers exceptional views and remains an important symbol of the country’s Christian heritage.

Continue to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of Georgia’s most revered religious monuments. According to tradition, the cathedral houses the robe of Christ, making it one of the holiest sites in the country. Constructed during the eleventh century, the cathedral impresses visitors with its elegant architecture, historical significance, and remarkable spiritual atmosphere.

Both Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and represent some of the finest achievements of medieval Georgian architecture.

The journey then continues to Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. This extraordinary cave city, whose origins date back to the first millennium BC, was once an important stop along the Silk Road and served as a major political, religious, and commercial center.

Explore a fascinating network of tunnels, halls, temples, living quarters, wine cellars, and ceremonial spaces carved directly into the rock. Walking through this remarkable archaeological site offers a unique glimpse into the daily life of ancient civilizations that flourished here centuries before the medieval period.

Later, travel to the nearby city of Gori, best known as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. During a short stop, view the Stalin Museum complex, including the modest house where he was born and his famous armored railway carriage, which accompanied him on many official journeys throughout the Soviet era.

Dinner and overnight in Gori.

Day 7:Gori – Tbilisi

After breakfast, return to Tbilisi for a final day of discovery in Georgia’s fascinating capital.

Today’s program focuses on a different side of the city, revealing neighborhoods and landmarks that highlight both Tbilisi’s historic elegance and contemporary energy.

Begin with a walk along the beautifully restored Aghmashenebeli Avenue, one of the city’s most attractive thoroughfares. Lined with elegant nineteenth-century buildings featuring colorful facades, decorative balconies, and European architectural influences, the avenue reflects Tbilisi’s multicultural past and ongoing revitalization.

As you explore this lively district, discover charming cafés, boutiques, local businesses, and hidden courtyards that showcase everyday life in the Georgian capital. The atmosphere here provides a wonderful contrast to the medieval streets of the Old Town visited earlier in the tour.

Continue to the famous Dry Bridge Market, one of Tbilisi’s most unique attractions. This open-air flea market is a treasure trove of antiques, artworks, handmade crafts, collectibles, Soviet memorabilia, vintage cameras, jewelry, books, and countless other curiosities. Browsing through the market offers fascinating insight into Georgia’s recent history and artistic culture while providing opportunities to purchase unique souvenirs.

The tour proceeds to the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, commonly known as Sameba Cathedral. As the largest religious building in the Caucasus, this impressive structure dominates the city’s skyline with its soaring golden dome and monumental architecture. Combining traditional Georgian design with modern engineering, the cathedral serves as one of the most important spiritual symbols of contemporary Georgia.

The remainder of the afternoon is free for independent exploration. You may choose to revisit favorite areas of the city, relax at a café, shop for souvenirs, or simply enjoy wandering through Tbilisi’s charming streets and vibrant neighborhoods.

In the evening, gather with your fellow travelers for a special farewell dinner in a local restaurant. Enjoy traditional Georgian cuisine one last time while celebrating the memorable experiences and friendships created throughout the journey.
