Begaso Family Winery

Nestled in the charming village of Sabue, just a stone’s throw from the historic Gremi Fortress, the Begaso Family Winery is a newly established estate that promises an enchanting experience amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains. At Begaso, visitors can look forward to a delightful day filled with exquisite wine tastings, a delicious traditional lunch, and even the option for overnight stays, all while savoring some of the most tantalizing Georgian wines.

The Begaso family’s journey into winemaking began in 2015, when siblings Nunu and Giorgi decided to breathe new life into their grandfather Luka Mosulishvili’s winemaking legacy. Faced with the challenge of reviving traditional Georgian winemaking, they seized the opportunity to restore the rich and enticing aromas of Georgian wines that had largely faded away during the 20th century. Many local grape varieties had been neglected over the years, and the family embarked on a quest to rediscover these lost gems. They meticulously tracked down fledgling grape plants, one by one, and brought them to the fertile Alazani Valley in eastern Georgia—a region renowned for its exceptional terroir and the celebrated Kindzmarauli red wine.

Now firmly established, the Begaso estate welcomes visitors for intimate wine tastings and delightful lunches, and has recently expanded its offerings to include overnight accommodations for those wishing to immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of this picturesque winery.

At the heart of the Begaso family’s mission is a commitment to cultivating indigenous grape varieties and producing wine using traditional qvevri vessels. They believe that this ancient winemaking method is essential for creating truly authentic wines that reflect the character of the land. In 2018, the family celebrated their first harvest, featuring two iconic Georgian grape varieties: Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. That same year, they planted four additional varieties: Mtsvane, Kisi, Khikhvi, and Rkatsiteli Rosé.

All wines produced at Begaso Family Winery are organic, as the chief winemaker is dedicated to allowing the natural quality and character of the grapes to shine through. Wine enthusiasts will be captivated by the remarkable flavors that are both innovative and steeped in history. Each distinct taste is designed to impress seasoned connoisseurs while also enticing newcomers to the world of wine, inviting them to share in an exclusive vinicultural experience rooted in traditions that date back over 8,000 years.

If you’re seeking a peaceful retreat in a tranquil village while immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of Georgian winemaking culture, be sure to plan a visit to Begaso Family Winery during your exploration of the Kakheti Region. Here, you can enjoy not only exquisite wines but also a satisfying culinary experience that showcases the best of local flavors.
