Nestled in the picturesque village of Chardakhi, Nebi Winery, also known as Nebi Aslanishvili Winery, is a cherished family-run establishment that offers a delightful escape from the bustling streets of Tbilisi, located just 35 kilometers away. This charming winery is the ideal destination for anyone seeking a serene day trip, where the tranquility of the countryside meets the rich traditions of Georgian viticulture.
The name “Nebi” translates to “palm of the hand,” a thoughtful choice that highlights the hands-on dedication of the winery’s workers at every step of the winemaking journey, from planting seeds to bottling the finished product.
The roots of Nebi Winery run deep, with its original cellar dating back approximately 300 years, built by the great-grandfather of Beka Aslanishvili. In 2010-2011, Beka and his family made the heartfelt decision to reconnect with their heritage by restoring their grandfather’s cellar and recovering his old qvevri—the traditional Georgian earthenware vessels essential for aging and fermenting wine. Although only one qvevri remained intact, the family persevered, replacing the others, and by 2013, they proudly bottled their first wine. Over the years, the winery has evolved, and today, its exceptional products are available throughout the Georgian market. During the pre-pandemic period, the family even employed local villagers to help meet growing demand, and Nebi Winery now boasts a production capacity of around 3,000 bottles per year.
Beka believes that wine embodies a philosophy for Georgians, and it is this mindset that drives the family to create such authentic and heartfelt products. He asserts that wine reflects the character of its maker, and by tasting the wines of Nebi Winery, visitors can gain insight into the lives of Beka, his father, and his grandparents.
The vineyard of Nebi Winery spans 3,000 square meters, where meticulous farming practices yield grapes bursting with concentrated flavors and aromas. Utilizing traditional winemaking techniques, the family crafts wines that are both high in quality and rich in character.
The region is particularly renowned for its Chinuri grape, a high-acidity white variety that forms the backbone of their wine production. While the family primarily focuses on Chinuri, they also produce red wines to cater to diverse palates. Their red offerings are crafted from Saperavi and Cabernet grapes, sourced from Dedoplistskharo Municipality in Kakheti, where Beka’s maternal grandfather tends to his own vineyards.
In 2017, Nebi Winery began to embrace agrotourism, allowing travelers to immerse themselves in the winemaking experience. Visitors can explore the vineyards, participate in grape picking, and enjoy wine tastings, all while purchasing products directly from the source. Guests are also treated to delightful homecooked meals and traditional sweets, such as churchkhela—a beloved Georgian candy made from threaded nuts cooked in flour-thickened grape juice. Many visitors rave about Beka’s wife, who is known for making some of the best khinkali (Georgian dumplings) in the region!
The family is excited about the future of Nebi Winery and is now focusing on producing organic and biodynamic wines, responding to the growing demand for sustainable options in the market.
