Nestled on the scenic ascent to St. Stephan Church in the charming town of Sighnaghi, located in the Kakheti Region of Georgia, Okro’s Wines invites you to indulge in a remarkable selection of wines while enjoying breathtaking views. The cozy establishment features a fantastic terrace that overlooks the stunning Alazani Valley, the majestic Caucasus Mountains, and the enchanting City of Love. Whether you’re savoring a leisurely lunch or dinner, we highly recommend pairing their exquisite amber wine with one of their lovingly crafted homecooked meals or participating in a tasting session featuring the finest Kakhetian wines.
Founded in 2004 by John Okruashvili, Okro’s Wines was born out of a passion for creating high-quality natural wines from traditional eastern Georgian grape varieties, including Rkatsiteli and Saperavi. While the winery’s name reflects the owner’s surname, the word “okro” also translates to “gold” in Georgian, symbolizing the richness and quality of the wines produced here.
At Okro’s Wines, every grape is cultivated organically, free from chemical additives. The wines are meticulously aged in qvevri, large earthenware vessels that are integral to Georgian winemaking traditions, used for fermentation, storage, and aging. The white and amber wines are crafted from local varieties such as Rkatsiteli, Kakhuri Mtsvane, and Tsolikouri, with aging periods ranging from one to six months. In addition to their exceptional wines, Okro’s also produces chacha (Georgian grappa) and has been creating sparkling wines since 2013.
With an annual production capacity of 30,000 bottles, Okro’s Wines has garnered acclaim for several standout selections:
Rkatsiteli 2018: This wine captivates with prominent notes of almonds, beeswax, and damson plums. Its structured and aromatic palate is complemented by a hint of acidity and a lingering tannic finish. Best enjoyed with traditional eastern Georgian dishes like khashlama (boiled beef), it boasts an alcohol content of 14.2%.
Kisi 2017: Experience the vibrant flavors of quince and cumin in this delightful wine, which pairs beautifully with a selection of Georgian cheeses. It has an alcohol content of 14%.
Tavkveri Rose 2018: For those seeking something unique, this lighter wine offers sweet strawberry notes that are perfect alongside soft cheeses and vegetable kebabs. Its alcohol content is 12%.
Other notable wines from Okro’s include Budeshuri Saperavi, with an alcohol content of 12.5%, which pairs well with salads and vegetable dishes, and Pettilant Naturel Wines, a sparkling wine that undergoes primary fermentation in qvevri before finishing in the bottle.
As Sighnaghi establishes itself as a burgeoning hub for ecotourism in Georgia, Okro’s Wines attracts visitors from across the globe, thanks to the purity and consistent quality of its offerings. Notably, Les Caves de Pyrene, a pioneer in the natural wine movement and supplier to many esteemed restaurants, imports Okro’s Wines into the UK.
The dining experience at Okro’s Wines Restaurant is nothing short of extraordinary. Guests can indulge in a variety of traditional Georgian dishes, including khashlama (Kakhetian-style veal), Okro’s Style (roasted pork with vegetables), Chickirtma (chicken soup), baked mushrooms with cheese, and the iconic khachapuri cheese bread. For those seeking vegetarian options, the menu features a delightful Kakhetian-style salad made with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and sunflower seed oil, along with roasted eggplant with walnuts and a vibrant salad of peppers and greens.
