Goruli Mtsvane is a prominent name among the white grape varieties that flourish in Georgia. During its peak maturity, this grape showcases a beautiful yellow-green hue, which is fittingly reflected in its name; “Mtsvane” is the Georgian term for “green.”
Mtsvane grapes are widely cultivated across nearly all regions of Georgia. Due to variations in their geographical locations, these grapes exhibit distinct ampelographic characteristics and agricultural traits. To differentiate between the various local types, Georgian viticulturists have assigned additional names based on their places of origin, such as Manavis Mtsvane, Kakhuri Mtsvane, Rachuli Mtsvane, and Meskhuri Mtsvane.
The name “Goruli Mtsvane” translates to “Green from Gori,” referencing the city in the Kartli region. In the western villages of Kartli and Upper Imereti, this grape is also known as Kvishkhura. Ampelographers trace the origins of Goruli Mtsvane to the Borjomi district, particularly the village of Kvishkheti. This variety can also be found in smaller quantities in Racha, where it is referred to as Tbiluri. The esteemed Georgian historian and researcher Ivane Javakhishvili regarded Goruli Mtsvane as the premier grape variety in Kartli.
Notably, the famous Georgian landowner from Kartli, Irakli Bagration-Mukhraneli, produced wines primarily from Goruli Mtsvane grapes at his estate in the village of Mukhrani. These wines gained acclaim both in Russia and internationally, receiving numerous accolades at prestigious exhibitions in Paris and Novgorod.
Goruli Mtsvane serves as the primary grape variety for the central districts of Kartli. The grape’s growing season spans a total of 213 days, from bud break to the end of leaf fall, with grapes achieving full maturity by the first week of October. A full harvest is typically realized four to five years after planting.
