Krakhuna grapes, a distinctive white grape variety native to the Imereti Region of Georgia, are primarily utilized in the production of both table and dessert wines.
Morphologically, Krakhuna is classified as a western Georgian grape variety. The esteemed Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili notes that its name has local roots, translating from an Imeretian dialect to mean “crispy.” This etymology reflects the grape’s unique characteristics and its significance within the region.
Today, Krakhuna is widely cultivated in the villages of Middle Imereti, although it can also be found, albeit less frequently, in Upper and Lower Imereti, as well as in the Racha, Lechkhumi, Guria, and Samegrelo regions. Additionally, this variety is now being grown in select locations abroad, expanding its reach and appreciation.
The vegetation period of the Krakhuna grape is influenced by prevailing weather and meteorological conditions. In warmer climates, the growing season tends to be shorter, while in cooler regions, the extended vegetation period allows for a gradual accumulation of heat, aiding in the ripening process. Consequently, Krakhuna grapes ripen earliest in Imereti and later in southern Ukraine. Typically, the vines begin to yield their first full crop in the third or fourth year after planting.
Krakhuna wine is renowned for its remarkable aging potential. When crafted in the classical style, it presents a yellow-tinted straw color, exuding fullness, vibrancy, and a pleasing flavor profile.
In contrast, Krakhuna wine produced in the Imeretian style showcases an amber-yellow hue and is characterized by a unique varietal aroma reminiscent of banana, honey, and white stone fruits. This style is celebrated for its energetic character and a slight roughness when young, making it an intriguing choice for wine enthusiasts.
Krakhuna grapes are often blended with two other prominent grape varieties from Imereti—Tsitska and Tsolikouri. The resulting wine boasts a golden color, a robust bouquet, and a harmonious, delicate taste that captivates the palate.
