Tavkveri Grapes

Tavkveri Grapes

Tavkveri grapes are a notable red grape variety originating from the Kartli Region of Georgia, celebrated for their generous yields and their role in crafting exquisite, light red wines.

The precise origins of the Tavkveri grape remain somewhat elusive, with limited historical evidence available. It is believed that this variety emerged through natural propagation, eventually adapting and establishing itself across various regions of Eastern Georgia. Based on its distinct botanical and biological characteristics, Tavkveri is classified as a grape variety native to the Kartli Region.

Within the Tavkveri classification, several sub-varieties can be found in both the Kakheti and Kartli districts. These include Black Tavkveri, White Tavkveri, Saperavi-like Tavkveri, Didmartsvala Tavkveri, and Patelaanteuli Tavkveri. Today, Tavkveri grapes are widely cultivated in areas such as Gori, Bolnisi, Gardabani, Tetri Tskaro, and Akhalgori.

Growth Characteristics

Tavkveri grapes reach their full maturity by early October, with a growing season that spans approximately 170 to 173 days from the opening of the buds to the point of full ripeness. While the first signs of harvest can appear in the second year after planting, it is more common for the initial yield to be realized in the third year. A full harvest typically occurs by the fifth year, making Tavkveri notable for its prolific yields.

Wine Profiles

Historically, the villages of Khidistavi and, to a lesser extent, the Ateni Gorge were renowned for their production of Tavkveri wines. Today, however, the majority of Tavkveri wine production is centered in the Kartli Region. The wines crafted from Tavkveri grapes are characterized by their light red hue, moderate alcohol content, and harmonious flavor profile, making them suitable for mass consumption. These wines are distinguished by their vibrant purple color, balanced extraction, and overall finesse.

In summary, Tavkveri grapes not only contribute to the rich tapestry of Georgian viticulture but also offer wine lovers a delightful experience with their unique characteristics and approachable style.
