Shavkapito is recognized as one of the oldest grape varieties in the Kartli region. In viticultural literature, it is sometimes referred to as Shavi Kapito or Shavkapita. While Shavkapito predominantly thrives in the Shida Kartli and Tskhinvali regions, it has also found its way into vineyards in Gori, Kaspi, Mtskheta, Akhaltsikhe, Aspindza, and the suburbs of Tbilisi.

The high-quality table wines produced from Shavkapito grapes are particularly notable in the villages of Kvemo Kartli, such as Achabeti, Kurta, Didi Dzartsemi, and Beruli. During the Soviet era, the grapes from these villages were not only used for table wines but also for producing sparkling wines, showcasing their versatility.

The growing season for Shavkapito spans approximately 176 to 177 days, starting from the first bud opening until the grapes reach full ripeness. The vines demonstrate their first signs of harvest in the second year after planting, with a full yield typically realized by the fourth year.
