Mtsvane grapes are a celebrated Georgian variety known for producing high-quality classic and Kakhetian white table wines. The name “Mtsvane” translates to “green” in Georgian, a nod to the grape’s pale emerald hue. Beyond its striking color, Mtsvane is renowned for its exceptional quality and generous yields.
While Mtsvane is distinctly Georgian, the lack of historical documentation makes it challenging to determine its exact origin. Generally, older grape varieties are more susceptible to environmental influences, which can lead to changes over centuries. The biological characteristics of Mtsvane suggest that it is an ancient green variety. Today, there are over six recognized variations of Mtsvane grapes, with the most common being Manavi Mtsvane, Goruli Mtsvane, and Kakhuri Mtsvane.
Mtsvane thrives at higher altitudes in temperate climates, which restricts its cultivation to specific areas within Georgia’s Kakheti Region. It is predominantly found in Telavi, Sagarejo, and parts of Akhmeta and Gurjaani. Additionally, it grows in select regions of Sighnaghi and Tsiteltskaro, but is nearly absent in Lagodekhi and Kvareli.
Like many Kakhetian grape varieties, Mtsvane typically produces its first harvest early, usually within three years of planting. These grapes are recognized for their excellent quality and relatively high yields.
Mtsvane is classified as a pure wine grape variety based on the appearance of the grape clusters, the mechanical composition, and the chemical variability of the juice. In the Telavi Region, the sugar content of the grapes can reach 22% during harvest, while in southeastern Kakheti, it may exceed 24%.
Compared to other Kakhetian varieties, Mtsvane has specific environmental requirements and necessitates timely, high-quality care. However, when provided with the right climate, fertile soil, and proper cultivation practices, it promises a fruitful and high-quality harvest.
Mtsvane grapes yield a premium product ideal for crafting delicate and aromatic table wines. Many classic and Kakhetian wines are derived from Mtsvane, with notable varieties including those from Akhmeta, Manavi, Ikalto, Ruispiri, Napareuli, Sanior, Tsinandali, and Vazisubani.
Classic wines made from Mtsvane exhibit a light green color, a vibrant fruity aroma, and a gentle yet lively, harmonious taste. Its robust aroma and softness have led winemakers to affectionately refer to this Caucasian wine as “Georgian Riesling.”
Kakhetian-style Mtsvane wines are crafted through a traditional process involving full-skin contact for 5-6 months, followed by fermentation and aging in qvevri vessels. These iconic Georgian wines display a deeper color and a beautifully balanced taste, creating a gentle bouquet with a distinctly fruity aroma.
