Khikhvi Grapes

Khikhvi Grapes

Khikhvi grapes represent a distinguished Georgian grape variety celebrated for producing exceptional table wines, classical selections, Kakhetian styles, and delightful dessert wines.

Khikhvi is recognized as one of the oldest grape varieties in Georgia, with the esteemed historian Ivane Javakhishvili asserting that it predates even the renowned Rkatsiteli grape. In the Telavi Region and Akhmeta District, this grape is known as Jananura, a name derived from the village of Janaani in Akhmeta. Across Georgia, there are several variations of Khikhvi, each with slightly different names based on regional distinctions: in Racha, it is referred to as Khikhva; in Lechkhumi, it retains the name Khikhvi; in Samegrelo, it is called Khemkhu; and in Guria, it is known as Khemkho.

Characteristics of Khikhvi

The growth cycle of the Khikhvi grapevine is influenced by the weather conditions of each year. Generally, a drier climate during the reproductive and vegetative periods leads to a shorter growth cycle. Like many Kakhetian varieties, Khikhvi begins to bear fruit relatively early, with the first signs of harvest appearing in the second year after planting. By the third year, the vine produces about one-third of a full crop, and by the fourth year, a normal yield is achieved.

Khikhvi is particularly noted for its remarkable ability to accumulate sugar. For instance, in Kardanakhi, located in Georgia’s Gurjaani District, the average sugar content hovers around 26-27%, and in some years, it can even reach 30%.

Wines Crafted from Khikhvi Grapes

Khikhvi grapes are primarily utilized to create high-quality table and dessert wines, employing both the traditional qvevri method and classical winemaking techniques. When produced using the classical method, the wine exhibits a light, transparent straw color, accompanied by a pleasant varietal aroma and a refined taste. In contrast, Kakhetian-style wines present a darker beige hue, characterized by a rich, harmonious flavor profile with notes of honey and wildflowers.

In Kardanakhi, a premium dessert wine is crafted from Khikhvi grapes, also named Khikhvi. This exquisite vintage Georgian wine was developed by the celebrated national winemaker Valerian Kandelaki. It features a dark amber color and a pleasing, well-balanced taste.

Historically, Khikhvi grapes have also played a significant role in enhancing the quality of Georgia’s renowned Rkatsiteli wine, showcasing their importance in the region’s winemaking heritage.
