Tsitska grapes are indigenous to Georgia and are highly regarded for their role in producing premium quality white wines.
Tsitska is classified as a Kolkhetian grape variety, based on its agricultural characteristics. The esteemed Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili noted that the grape derives its name from the villages of Tsitskhe and Tsitskiuri. In certain villages within the Imereti region, Tsitska is also referred to as Shanti, Tsitsko, and Mamal Tsitska.
This grape variety thrives best in elevated, mountainous terrains, which is why it is predominantly found in the viticultural regions of western Georgia, particularly across much of Upper and Middle Imereti. In eastern Georgia, small quantities of Tsitska can also be located in the villages of the Lagodekhi District. Beyond Georgia’s borders, Tsitska grapes have begun to be cultivated in Ukraine and Moldova as well.
The duration of the Tsitska grape’s growing season can vary significantly depending on the local ecology and the meteorological conditions of each year. The vines typically show their first signs of harvest in the second year after planting, with a full yield usually realized by the fourth year.
Tsitska grapes are known for their late ripening, which generally occurs around mid-October. The sugar content of the grapes can range from 18% to 25%, contributing to the quality of the wines produced.
Wines crafted from Tsitska grapes exhibit a light beige color and are celebrated for their gentle, harmonious taste, accompanied by aromas of pear, quince, and citrus.
Often, Tsitska is blended with Tsolikouri and occasionally with Krakhuna to create a distinguished white dry wine known as Sviri. This wine, which holds the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status, is characterized by its dark straw color, cheerful and balanced flavor, and fruity bouquet, making it a true expression of Georgia’s rich winemaking heritage.
In summary, Tsitska grapes not only embody the essence of Georgian viticulture but also offer wine enthusiasts a delightful experience with their unique characteristics and the exceptional wines they produce.
