Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Tbilisi – Introduction to the Soul of Georgia

Welcome to Georgia! Upon arrival at Tbilisi International Airport, our friendly driver will greet you and escort you to your hotel for check-in (available from noon). After a brief rest, your Georgian adventure begins with a guided city tour of Tbilisi, the vibrant heart of the country.

Your first stop is the iconic Metekhi Church, perched gracefully above the Kura River, alongside the statue of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the legendary founder of Tbilisi. From there, ascend by cable car to Narikala Fortress, a centuries-old sentinel that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the capital’s eclectic skyline.

Descending on foot, you’ll wander through the atmospheric sulfur bath district, a historic quarter famed for its distinctive domed bathhouses. Pass by Tbilisi’s only mosque, symbolizing the city’s multicultural spirit. Meander through the charming Sharden neighborhood, with its labyrinth of narrow alleys, cozy cafes, art galleries, and wine bars that evoke the old-world charm of Tbilisi.

Next, visit the sacred Sioni Cathedral and the Anchiskhati Basilica, the city’s oldest surviving church. A highlight of the tour is the whimsical Rezo Gabriadze Clock Tower, an artistic landmark that enchants visitors with its mechanical puppet show.

Day 2Tbilisi – Scenic Kakheti Wine Region – Telavi

After a hearty breakfast, depart for the Kakheti region, renowned as the birthplace of Georgian wine-making. Your route winds through the picturesque Gombori Pass, offering sweeping views of rolling hills and forested landscapes.

Arrive in Telavi, the historical and administrative center of Kakheti. Stroll through its old streets, lined with quaint houses and charming courtyards, and pause at the monument of King Erekle II, a revered figure in Georgian history.

Visit the Batonistsikhe Fortress, a 17th-century royal residence now transformed into an engaging museum showcasing the region’s heritage. Continue to Tsinandali Estate, once the home of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, an influential poet and public figure. Explore the manicured English-style gardens, elegant museum halls, and historic wine cellar that breathes the legacy of Georgia’s noble families.

Next, head to the Shumi Winery, where you’ll not only taste exquisite wines but also immerse yourself in local traditions. Depending on the season, partake in the age-old ritual of grape harvesting (rtveli) and try your hand at baking khachapuri, Georgia’s beloved cheese-filled bread. A delightful lunch at the winery will introduce you to the authentic flavors of Kakheti.

Return to Telavi for an overnight stay, basking in the serene ambiance of the Kakhetian countryside.

Day 3:Telavi – Monasteries, Wine Caves & City of Love – Return to Tbilisi

Today, journey deeper into the heart of Kakheti and the lush Alazani Valley. After hotel checkout, visit the ancient Nekresi Monastery Complex, founded in the 6th century. Set on a forested hill, this sacred site rewards visitors with peaceful surroundings and sweeping valley vistas.

Proceed to the remarkable Khareba Winery, nestled within a network of tunnels carved into solid rock. Originally built for strategic military use, these cool tunnels now house some of Georgia’s finest wines. Enjoy a guided wine tour and tasting session, savoring the depth of Georgian viticulture.

Next, explore Sighnaghi, known as the “City of Love” and famed for its well-preserved city walls with 23 watchtowers. Stroll along cobbled streets with pastel-hued houses and admire panoramic views of the Alazani Valley. Enjoy a leisurely lunch in Sighnaghi, where local cuisine and wines come together in a perfect harmony.

On your way back to Tbilisi, stop at the Bodbe Monastery, where Georgia’s revered Saint Nino is said to be buried. Since the 19th century, this tranquil convent has been a significant pilgrimage site.

Return to Tbilisi for overnight at the hotel.

Day 4:Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Ananuri – Kazbegi – Gudauri

After breakfast, embark on a journey to Mtskheta, Georgia’s spiritual and historical capital. Visit the Jvari Monastery, perched high on a cliff with stunning views of the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari Rivers. Continue to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, a masterpiece of Georgian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, believed to house Christ’s robe.

Travel along the scenic Georgian Military Highway, stopping at the Ananuri Fortress Complex, a 16-17th century ensemble of churches and defensive towers overlooking the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir.

Ascend towards the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains, reaching the alpine resort of Gudauri. En route, marvel at mineral springs and colorful travertine formations cascading down hillsides.

Arrive in Kazbegi (Stepantsminda), a picturesque mountain town at the foot of Mount Kazbek (5,033 m). A highlight awaits as you visit the Gergeti Holy Trinity Church, perched dramatically at 2,170 meters above sea level, offering awe-inspiring views of the majestic peak.

Overnight in Gudauri, surrounded by snow-capped summits and crisp mountain air.

Day 5:Gudauri – Gori – Uplistsikhe – Kutaisi

Following breakfast, journey westward to Gori, the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Explore the Stalin Museum, housing personal artifacts, the humble wooden house of his birth, and his armored train carriage.

Next, delve into ancient history at Uplistsikhe, a fascinating rock-hewn town that once served as a prominent pagan and later Christian center. Wander through its labyrinth of caves, ancient dwellings, and ceremonial halls carved into the cliffs.

Continue to Kutaisi, the heart of Western Georgia, traversing the Rikoti Pass, a natural bridge between east and west. En route, visit Ubisa Monastery, home to vibrant 9th-century frescoes, and stop in Shrosha village, famous for its traditional pottery craftsmanship.

Arrive in Kutaisi for an overnight stay.

Day 6:Kutaisi – Prometheus Cave – Okatse Canyon – Return to Kutaisi

Today, discover the natural marvels of Imereti. Start with a stroll through old Kutaisi, visiting the iconic Bagrati Cathedral, a symbol of Georgia’s medieval golden age.

Proceed to the Prometheus Cave, an underground wonderland adorned with striking stalactites, stalagmites, and subterranean lakes, enhanced by a mesmerizing LED lighting display.

In the afternoon, venture to Okatse Canyon, a stunning gorge framed by lush forests and dramatic cliffs. Walk the suspension bridges for thrilling views over the canyon before returning to Kutaisi for overnight.

Day 7:Kutaisi – Gelati – Shaori Lake – Tskhrajvari – Nikortsminda – Kutaisi

After breakfast, visit the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery, a medieval academy and spiritual hub founded by King David the Builder.

Journey through scenic landscapes, passing the Nakerala Pass to reach Tskhrajvari (“Nine Crosses”), a site steeped in legend and offering panoramic views of the Racha region.

Enjoy a serene stop at Shaori Lake, surrounded by pristine forests, followed by a visit to Nikortsminda Cathedral, famed for its exceptional frescoes and architecture.

Return to Kutaisi for overnight.

Day 8:Kutaisi – Katskhi Pillar – Chiatura – Borjomi

Begin your day with a visit to the awe-inspiring Katskhi Pillar, a towering 40-meter limestone monolith crowned by a solitary chapel and home to a single monk, Father Maxime.

Continue to Chiatura, an industrial town set amidst dramatic ravines. Ride the newly reconstructed cable cars, once known as the “flying coffins,” and explore the remnants of Soviet-era mining infrastructure.

Conclude the day at the Mghvemevi Monastery, renowned for its intimate rock-hewn church and vivid frescoes. Transfer to Borjomi for overnight.

Day 9:Borjomi – Akhaltsikhe

After enjoying a hearty breakfast at the hotel, begin your day by exploring one of Georgia’s most renowned spa towns, Borjomi. Famous worldwide for its unique mineral waters, Borjomi’s history as a therapeutic resort dates back to the 19th century, when members of the Russian imperial family frequented the area for its healing springs. Take a relaxing stroll through the lush Borjomi Central Park, where beautifully landscaped paths weave among towering trees, charming bridges, and fountains. The park is home to the original mineral water spring, where you can taste the iconic Borjomi water directly from its natural source. Those interested can also take a short walk to the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest protected areas in Europe, offering pristine nature and scenic hiking trails.

In the afternoon, leave Borjomi and drive towards the historical city of Akhaltsikhe, located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The road itself is picturesque, flanked by rolling hills and quiet villages. Upon arrival, visit the city’s crowning jewel—the impressive Rabati Fortress, a magnificent stone citadel that stands as a testament to Georgia’s rich and diverse history. Originally constructed in the 9th century, Rabati has been reconstructed and expanded throughout the centuries, reflecting the architectural influences of various cultures, including Georgian, Turkish, Armenian, and Russian. Within the fortress walls, explore the ancient Orthodox Church, a mosque, a synagogue, and a small Catholic church, symbolizing the multicultural fabric of Akhaltsikhe. Stroll through the cobbled streets of the fortress complex, admire the intricately decorated interiors, and enjoy panoramic views over the town and surrounding landscape.

In the evening, after this immersive historical experience, return to your hotel in Akhaltsikhe for an overnight stay, with free time to relax and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

Day 10:Akhaltsikhe – Abastumani Observatory – Vardzia

Following breakfast, check out from the hotel and embark on a scenic drive towards Abastumani, a serene alpine resort town located on the southern slopes of the Meskheti Range. Nestled amidst dense coniferous forests, Abastumani is famed not only for its healing thermal springs but also for being home to the Georgian National Astrophysical Observatory. Established in the early 20th century, the observatory is the first high-altitude astrophysical observatory in the former Soviet Union. If access is permitted (as the site is an active scientific institution), you will have the unique opportunity to learn about Georgia’s contributions to astronomy, view the powerful telescopes, and hear fascinating stories about space exploration and celestial discoveries made here.

Continuing your journey, proceed to one of Georgia’s most iconic historical landmarks — the majestic Vardzia Cave Monastery Complex. This extraordinary city carved into the cliffs of Erusheti Mountain was constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries under the reign of King George III and his daughter, the legendary Queen Tamar. Designed initially as a defensive stronghold against Mongol invasions, Vardzia soon evolved into a significant spiritual and cultural center. As you explore the labyrinthine network of caves, marvel at the sheer scale of the complex: multi-storied tunnels, winding staircases, and hidden passageways leading to ancient churches, bell towers, royal apartments, wine cellars, and communal halls.

Day 11:Vardzia – Poka – Paravani Lake – Tsalka Canyon – Tbilisi

After breakfast, continue your exploration of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, rich in spiritual heritage and untouched nature. Your first destination is the Poka Nunnery, also known as St. Nino Monastery, a historic religious site established in the 11th century. According to tradition, Saint Nino, the revered female evangelist who brought Christianity to Georgia, rested here during her missionary journey. Today, the nunnery is a vibrant monastic community, where the nuns are renowned for producing an array of artisanal goods. Take the opportunity to visit the small monastic shop, where you can purchase handmade cheeses, chocolates, jams, herbal liqueurs, honey, and beautifully crafted candles — all made using traditional recipes passed down through generations.

Leaving Poka, you will drive towards the mesmerizing Paravani Lake, the largest lake in Georgia, situated at an altitude of 2,073 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the volcanic plateaus of Javakheti, Paravani offers a stark yet stunning landscape of open skies and rugged beauty. In the late afternoon, begin your return journey to Tbilisi, passing through picturesque mountain roads, traditional villages, and open highland plains.
